design walk and crafts…

Hey people! Long time not seen but i didn’t have any internet access! This post is about last weekend! On Saturday i went to Ash in Art, a craft exhibition where lovely creations were displayed! My really good friend Strigles Craftcrime was there with her amazing creations, as well as Naked Tile which i finally met personally and she was kind enough to support my Not Shop Project and give me a lovely pair of earrings. I also met Irene Palaiologou, that makes necklaces and rings from sod cans (i ve tried to make some myself but not as successfully as she does!), and lovely brooches from figurines…(stay tuned cause this week there is a give away coming from lovely Irene!).

This post will continue so bare with me! I mean we haven’t “talked” for ages so i just have to share with you my weekend!
So after Ash in Art i had a loooongggg walk in Design Walk. The theme this year was POLES APART and 13 Graphic Design Studios resolve 13 contradictory elements within the creative process. I really like the idea of Design Walk as you are able to walk in the studios, met the designers, have a chat and get to know their work. My favorite ones were the following three!

Geometry
Noise vs. Silence

“A thing, until it is everything, is noise, and once it is everything, it is silence”. (Antonio Porcia)
The transmission of signals becomes increasingly more dense, and information tends to degrade into entropy, noise, absolute vagueness. A truth appears because an event interrupts repetition. It is a thing, that we cannot name, but we decide to remain faithful to, to take the chance of examining it. It is a message that demands decoding, before it becomes fully apparent. Yet, if its meaning became absolute, thus nameable, the whole process of interpretation and construction of truth would collapse into silence. A multimedia installation by Geometry.

The above text is the text that appears in the map of Design Walk for Geometry. I believe that with their installations they completely grasped the idea of silence versus noise. One of the video installations presented one of the teachers that teach sign language, and next to him there was a text explaining to us what he was talking about. I found out that Mediterranean people that are unable to talk or hear can communicate with greater ease with sign language cause  Mediterranean people tend to use more their hands when talking!

They also had an installation that combined colors with sound. You could hit one of the colors and a different sound was produced. It kind of reminded me of xylophones but in a human size scale. I really likes all their installations that unfortunately could not take pictures of (crappy camera), because they were quite human in the sense that they were about human interaction and the sense of silence and noise.

I AM design, etc
Original vs. Copy

“Original Vs Copy” goes beyond the limits of creation and enters the realm of creator. The family, social and geographical influences, the roles in which we get to the limits that must be crossed, and ultimately the degree of authenticity of any design we make in relation to the perception of the observer looking. Guests are invited to meet their neighbour and recognize the authentic, or not, evidence of his behaviour, eventually finding themselves faced with their own originality. The tool of this quest is a three-dimensional audio-visual formula.

I am not so sure if they achieved the purpose of the theme but i really liked the installation with the red thread going along the ceiling of the room.

Sereal Designers
Interesting vs. Boring

The perceptual ability of the individual is determined by culture, education, environment and the historical conditions in which it was formed. His mental process also establishes the uniqueness of the individual. The object of perception always has as many possible interpretations, as there are different conditions that define the angle. Everything is in the visible world, and the world of ideas, open to infinite different approaches. Based on these general principles, Sereal designers dive into the world of inherent contradiction and grapple to highlight the ambiguous status of the words “interesting” and “boring”. Moreover, these two words, being only a verbal process of representing ideas, do not suggest a conflict or disagreement, but an agreement and an even more interdependent relation.

black or white? how is your city? interesting or boring?

G
Beauty vs. Ugliness

How can we define beauty and ugliness?
Umberto Eco in his book “The History of beauty” says that the one who is thirsty cannot appreciate the beauty of the fountain, so in a way he says that beauty and ugliness are a matter of circumstances. He wonders if somebody who doesn’t eat sweets would ever admire a cake in a patisserie window.
Studio G examine (investigate) a series of questions: do beauty and ugliness depend on trends? how bounded is this? could we prefer something ugly? and if we choose the ugly does this become beautiful automatically? The visitor is challenged to make a decision, like all of us do everyday, to put ordinary objects into the category of beauty or ugliness. He or she has to make his statement, and agree or disagree with other visitors as well.

g
I believe this was by far the most interactive approach as the visitors were invited to choose between white boxes that contained everyday objects and categorize them either ugly or beautiful. I could do this for hours as it was fun opening the boxes and discovering the content and choosing where to put the box.

I know this has been a massive post but i hope u did enjoy it! So how was your weekend? I d love to hear what u ve been up to!
