The NOT shop project…365 days without shopping

the NOT shop project from Thalia Geladaki on Vimeo.

The NOT shop project is something that i have been thinking quite a while now but i decided to make it happen with the beginning of this year.
As you can see in the video (not the best quality and i look like a 10 year old but you get the idea!) the idea started when i clothes and what i am going to wear everyday became a bit too important for me.
I mean i woke up in the morning looking at my closet and thinking what should i wear today and nothing seemed to be good enough and people seriously i do have clothes. I mean a lot of clothes and i ended up wearing the same grey cardigan almost everyday!
So i thought, we ve already swapped clothes, may be its time i stop buying them for a while and see how imaginative and creative i can become with the ones that i ve already have.
So this is how the NOT shop project began.
365 days without shopping anything related to clothes and accessories is quite a challenge for me but i believe it can happen.
For every day that i am not shopping anything i am going to put 5€ aside which by the end of the year i am going to have 365 x 5 = 1825€
This is kind of a target and a reward for me. I am also going to document my daily outfits and keep a diary of not shopping and see how the whole thing goes.
It might work, it might not.
Let’s see how it goes…

P.S. I would like to add here some links of a couple of similar very interesting and inspiring projects that have been suggested to me to read by a friend! Do check them out and see that i am not that nuts there are other people that have successfully decided to avoid shopping!

Judith Levine

With great wit and spirit, Judith Levine tackles a profound question: Why do we buy and what do we get out of it? Clue: the answer is not just things. If you have to do without, or just want to do with less, Levine is the person to do it with.

Susan Wagner
She gave up something for the entire month of October and she shared and documented her outfits on flickr.

Lila Das Gupta
Lila Das Gupta and her family have begun a one-year ‘no shopping’ experiment. But they are not all sold on living without new things unless they’re necessary. And already the strain is showing…
